 Total joint replacement surgery is one of the most common and successful treatments for certain
types of arthritis in the hip or knee. Arthritis deteriorates the joints and surrounding cartilage,
causing great pain, immobility and stiffness. Joint replacement surgery replaces the deteriorated
joint and cartilage with artificial joints created with the latest technology.
Baltimore Washington Medical Center provides complete care for patients needing joint replacement. In 1975,
BWMC (then North Arundel Hospital) was the site of Anne Arundel County's first joint replacement surgery and,
in 2001, was the site of the first oxidized zirconium knee replacement in Maryland. Since that first procedure, BWMC orthopedists have performed more than 5,000 joint replacements and continue to achieve excellence through technology and exemplary surgical outcomes.
The Joint Replacement Center provides comprehensive, team-focused care to patients before,
