Peri-Anesthesia Nursing

The Pre-anesthetic Surgical Screening (PASS) and Ambulatory Admissions Units (AAA) prepare patients for surgery before admission and on the day of surgery. This includes working with surgeons and their office staff and the hospital?s Anesthesia Department to assure the appropriate testing is performed,  the results of the tests have been reviewed and that the patient has been informed of his or her care before, during and after surgery. The RN?s in this unit work with surgical outpatients and patients who will be admitted to the hospital post-operatively. The work done in these units assure that the patient and their families are prepared physically, mentally and emotionally for their surgical experience.

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a 37 bed unit directly adjacent to the Operating Room. This area consists of three distinct patient care areas or phases. Most patients from the Operating Room will go to Phase I or acute area immediately after their surgery. This area is set up as a critical care area where close monitoring of patients is performed. Patients who are going home the same day will also go to Phase II for a short time. There they are assisted to a recliner where they will receive nourishment, discharge instructions from an RN and assistance with getting dressed. Their family member or significant other will join them there and the patient is then discharged from this area. The Phase III area or Extended Care Area of PACU is for surgical, interventional radiology and cardiac cath patients who have undergone procedures and need to be monitored for a longer time before they are discharged home. In addition, the PACU RNs are assigned limited on call responsibility on weekends and holidays. Monday through Friday there is regular RN staff assigned in the unit on all three shifts, days, evenings and nights.

Testimonials

Shannon Adams, RN
"As a Clinical Coordinator in the PACU setting, I have the pleasure of working with great RNs from various backgrounds. We care for a variety of surgical patients with a great amount of teamwork and camaraderie. Some of the specifics that have made this job right for me include scheduled on call for weekends and holidays as opposed to working regularly scheduled weekend shifts."

Rose Perkins-Banks, RN
"As a Registered Nurse in the Ambulatory Admissions Area, I am a member of a team that provides care to individuals scheduled for same day surgery. Upon arrival to AAA, many of the individuals are fearful. It is very rewarding to see how their fears are alleviated as procedures are explained and assurance is given that the staff at BWMC are the best of the best."
