Dermatology

Dermatology is the branch of medicine that deals with the skin and its structure, functions and diseases. Baltimore Washington Medical Center dermatologists treat a range of diseases and conditions of the skin, including skin cancer and precancerous lesions, eczema, pigmentary disorders, psoriasis, acne, dandruff and rashes.

Skin Cancer and Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are two of the most common forms of skin cancer. Basal cell is slow growing and usually develops on the head and neck. If left untreated, it can invade bone and other tissues beneath the skin. Squamous cell is more aggressive and more likely to invade tissues beneath the skin. It usually appears on the face, ear, neck, lip, and back of the hands. Key warning signs for both of these cancers include new growth, a spot or bump that's getting larger or a sore that doesn't heal within three months.

If you have skin cancer, you may benefit from Mohs Micrographic Surgery. With Mohs, trained doctors remove only diseased tissue with a small margin. They then use a microscope to pinpoint the areas where cancer may still be present and selectively remove tissue only from those areas, preserving healthy tissue and minimizing the cosmetic impact of the surgery.
