Baltimore Washington Medical Center is a Primary Stroke Center, meaning it can provide life-saving treatment to patients who may have suffered a stroke. The Primary Stroke Center designation permits Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel to transport apparent stroke patients to Primary Stroke Centers that meet the American Stroke Association and MIEMSS standards of care for stroke patients.

The medical center's stroke unit, along with its physicians and nurses, provide stroke patients with the care they need, 24 hours a day. The unit follows specific pathways and protocols designed specifically for stroke patients to ensure that every patient receives the highest quality care.

Because education about stroke is so important, Baltimore Washington Medical Center's stroke unit offers special programs for the general public, and for those who have suffered a stroke and/or are at risk of stroke.
