“Delivering the Future” of Care
On April 27, the Baltimore Washington Medical Center Foundation kicked off “Delivering the Future” - the largest capital campaign in the history of the Medical Center.
Bob Pascal, former Anne Arundel County Executive, made the first gift of the campaign by donating $2 million toward the women’s center, which will include the new obstetrics unit. The campaign goal is $12 million to complete the funding of the $117 million needed to underwrite the new patient tower, obstetrics unit and expanded emergency department.
Two local businessmen are co-chairs of the campaign: Joe Aiello, owner J.B.A. Chevrolet and J.B.A. Mitsubishi in Glen Burnie, and J.B.A. Infiniti in Ellicott City; and Kent Schwab, owner of Allstate Kent Schwab Agency in Baltimore. Both men are long time supporters of BWMC and members of the BWMC Foundation Board of Directors.

The central focus of the planned expansion will be a 290,000 square-foot, eight-story Patient Care Tower. The new Tower will allow us to increase the number of private beds available to our medical-surgical patients. The Tower will include 87 new private medical-surgical beds and 24 new intensive care beds for critically ill and injured patients. The project will also include a new clinical information system and upgrades to our operating rooms.
“This is an exciting time for Baltimore Washington Medical Center,” Aiello said. “People throughout the region will benefit from this campaign by having greater access to much-needed services. As co-chair, I am dedicated to the campaign’s success and what it means for the future of the Medical Center.”
The Obstetrics Center will be housed in both the new Patient Tower and 18 remodeled post-partum beds in our existing tower. This is a long-anticipated opportunity for expanded service to the community and will be part of a Women’s Health Center that will include, in addition to the Obstetrics Center, outpatient services with obstetricians and gynecologists from the University of Maryland’s Center for Advanced Fetal Care.
Baltimore Washington Medical Center’s Emergency Department is among the busiest in the state. Increasingly, the ED has become the hospital’s primary point of entry for patients, reflecting changes in the provision of primary health care, and a growing population of under-insured. Last year, 85,000 patients passed through the doors of the ED, making it one of the busiest in the state.
The last component of this capital initiative is the creation of a permanent Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship Fund. The Fund will provide support and encouragement to our talented health care workers eager to pursue higher levels of training within the industry. Included among the areas of specialization our workers are encouraged to pursue are: Radiology, Pharmacy, Patient Care, Respiratory, Physical Therapy, and Nursing.
The annual number of ED visits are expected to rise to 100,000 within the next few years, making additional space an imperative. The addition of 17 new treatment rooms will help shorten waiting time and guarantee the finest quality patient experience.
Baltimore Washington Medical Center is here to serve the health care needs of your family and the community for generations to come. BWMC provides the finest, most comprehensive health care services you can find in any community hospital, anywhere, anytime.
