Joslin Diabetes Center

Treating patients with diabetes and other endocrine issues.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is an illness in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin.  Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into the energy needed for daily life.

The cause of diabetes is not yet known, although both genetics and lifestyle factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 20.8 million people in the United States, or 7% of the population, have diabetes.  It is estimated that about one-third – 5.2 million people – are unaware that they have the disease and in Maryland, some 300,000 residents are estimated to have diabetes according to the Centers for Disease Control.
