Stroke Care
Baltimore Washington Medical Center's neurology staff are outstanding, highly skilled professionals, including nine physicians. They also work closely with physicians in other disciplines to assure each patient receives the best, most appropriate care possible.
Baltimore Washington Medical Center is a Primary Stroke Center, meaning it can provide life-saving treatment to patients who may have suffered a stroke. The Primary Stroke Center designation permits Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel to transport apparent stroke patients to Primary Stroke Centers that meet the American Stroke Association and MIEMSS standards of care for stroke patients.
The medical center's stroke unit, along with its physicians and nurses, provide stroke patients with the care they need, 24 hours a day. The unit follows specific pathways and protocols designed specifically for stroke patients to ensure that every patient receives the highest quality care.
Because education about stroke is so important, Baltimore Washington Medical Center's stroke unit offers special programs for the general public, and for those who have suffered a stroke and/or are at risk of stroke. Programs without charge include:
The Stroke Support Group that meets the second Tuesday of every month in Baltimore Washington Medical Center's Dr. Constantine Padussis Conference Center. The meetings are offered as a resource for patients who are recovering from a stroke or who are at high risk for a stroke. Family and friends are encouraged to attend. For further information, contact Cindy Knott at 410-787-4457.
Every May, which is Stroke Awareness Month, the hospital holds a free Stroke Fair to promote stroke prevention and to educate those at high risk about prevention, the warning signs and treatment of stroke.
Blood pressure screenings at various locations throughout the community.
BWMC professionals are available to speak about stroke at community, business or church meetings. To schedule a speaker, please call 410-787-4366.
