Construction: More Than Just a Vision

tower construction When you pass the massive construction, it’s hard to believe it has only been two years since Baltimore Washington Medical Center announced its plans for a $117 million expansion project, including a new patient tower, an obstetrics unit and an expanded emergency department.

The mild, dry weather has allowed construction to stay on schedule. In fact, a major portion of the emergency department expansion – with additional exam rooms and an enlarged waiting area for the more than 86,000 patients treated each year – is expected to be complete this spring.

Although much work remains for the new patient tower’s projected 2009 open date, it’s more than just a vision now. The rooms are defined and the departments outlined. The infrastructure, including the duct work, electric, computer and phone systems, is in place. Contractors are conditioning and weatherproofing the building by installing finishes such as Sheetrock and windows.

As construction continues, staff will be gearing up for the obstetrics unit – moving into the new tower and renovating the space in the existing one to ensure a comfortable stay for mom and baby.

With the region rapidly expanding, a growing BWMC is poised to meet the rising demand for exceptional health care in our community.
